Chicago Children's Museum Relocation Update

On May 16, fter a marathon session, the Chicago Plan Commission voted to approve the plan by the Chicago Children's Museum to move to Grant Park. The board voted 13-2 to send the proposal on to the full City Council. The vote followed a debate that stretched on for almost nine hours, as hundreds of people came to City Hall to have their say on the proposal.

On June 5, the Chicago Children's Museum's plan to relocate from Navy Pier to Grant Park received approval of from the Committee on Zoning by a narrow margin of 6-3.

On June 11, at 10:00 a.m. in City Council Chambers, t
he Council voted 33 to 16 to approve the controversial plan to build a new, $100 million Children's Museum in Grant Park.

Alderman Brendan Reilly encourages all interested parties to visit www.savegrantpark.org and join the effort to prevent development in Grant Park.

Proposed Post Office Site Redevelopment

Plans are underway for a major redevelopment of the Fort Dearborn Station Post Office located on the block bordered by Dearborn, Grand, Clark and Ohio.  Alderman Reilly, the DPD, the RNRA and other interested parties favor development of a significant new public park on this site.

In light of the significant impact of this project on the River North community, we have created a special page of our site dedicated to the Fort Dearborn redevelopment initiative.

Lurie Children's Hospital

Construction Alert

Children’s Memorial Hospital continues construction on the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago at 225 E. Chicago Ave. (next to Northwestern Memorial’s Prentice Women’s Hospital).

Throughout this month, the following are the primary activities that will occur at the construction site:  Continuation of site excavation and Installation of soil anchors. Phase I (perimeter) sheeting installation is complete, and the Superior St. and Chicago Ave. barricade installation is substantially finished. There will be no work performed on July 4th.

As a reminder, typical work days/hours are Monday through Saturday from 8am to 6pm. There are times when work will continue beyond those hours. The City Code noise ordinance allows for drilling (or similar noisier work) to continue until 8pm.

Please visit our Development Page for more information on this proposed project and access to related materials and resources.

Grand/State CTA Renovation: March 21 Update

New, expanded mezzanine

CDOT has worked very closely with the Police Department and OEMC to ensure that traffic flows as smoothly as possible.  As we do with all our large-scale projects, we will closely monitor the construction and its traffic impacts, and make any necessary adjustments. See CDOT 3/21 Bulletin.

Reconstruction of the station itself is tentatively scheduled to begin the week of April 1.  At this time, lane reductions on both Grand and State will take effect. We are doing everything we can to minimize disruption and will continue to do so throughout the project. As always, should you have any questions, comments or suggestions, don’t hesitate to contact us.  You can call (312) 744-8061 or e-mail cdotnews@cityofchicago.org.  To learn more about the project, visit our web site at www.cityofchicago.org/transportation

Thank you again for your patience and understanding. Chicago Department of Transportation - Grand-State Red Line reconstruction team

CTA Brown Line Expansion Project

The temporary entrance to the Chicago Avenue Brown Line station (one block south at Superior & Franklin) is expected to be in place through Spring 2008. Customers use new stairways to the elevated platforms at the temporary entrance to access Purple Line Express and Brown Line trains. The temporary entrance provides the same amenities as the original entrance, including farecard vending machines. Click here for info.

Revised Dog Friendly Area Plan

The RNDOA and RNRA have created a new design for the proposed Dog Friendly Area (DFA) to be located in the north section of Erie Park, west of Larabee.  This version is based on the Park District's site grading, drainage and ADA requirements.  Please note that this is a preliminary concept only and has not been approved by the Chicago Park District.  Final plans for development of this area will result from a series of meetings between the Park District, the Erie Park Advisory Council and the local community.  More to come...

Click here to view the latest design proposal.

Click here to access the Park District DFA regulations.

Erie Park Dog Friendly Area Survey

Prior to approving the construction of a new DFA, the Chicago Park District requires the endorsement of a majority of residents within a five-block radius of the proposed location.

Please click here to participate in our brief, confidential survey and express your opinion about this planned amenity.  The River North Residents Association, River North Dog Owners Association and Erie Park Advisory Council support this project.

Click here to access a summary of the survey results so far.
