New Public Art in River
North

Background and History
The work of Los Angeles artist Sheila Klein,
Commemorative Ground Ring, was commissioned by Sculpture Chicago in
1989. The sculpture is made of welded, anodized aluminum, buffed
and lacquered for permanent outdoor installation.
Commemorative Ground Ring takes the shape of a gigantic
ring incorporating familiar elements from Chicago's rich architectural
heritage. The ring is pierced by tripartite "Chicago windows",
while the ring's "gemstone" is a cube-like structure consisting of an
etched representation of Louis Sullivan's design for the Getty tomb in
Graceland cemetery, topped by a low, hipped roof characteristic of the
Prairie School of architecture. Projecting from either side of the
"gemstone" are flat, stylized representations of the facades of the
towers of two Chicago landmarks: the Wrigley Building and 333 North
Michigan Avenue. With its pale silvery color and pierced band and
ornaments, the Ring gives an impression of lightness, airiness and
delicacy, that belies its approximately 1700 pound weight.
As a work commissioned for Sculpture Chicago, the City's
only regular exhibition of outdoor sculpture, the Commemorative Ground
Ring has become part of a long tradition of public monuments that
reaches back to Lorado Taft and the foundation of the Ferguson fund in
1905. Klein's piece is an homage to the City's proud heritage of
outstanding and innovative architecture, highlighting its most vibrant
period, from the Chicago School to Frank Lloyd Wright, in symbolic
images that are familiar to all Chicagoans.
Prior to being installed at the entrance to River
North's new park, the work resided for many years in front of the
Chicago Historical Society.
